Phoenix first responders reported a three-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of State Route 51 at Union Hills, officials said.
One person is dead and three people, including a pregnant woman and an infant, are in critical condition following a crash on State Route 51 on Friday night.
The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a three-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of SR 51 at Union Hills Drive.
When crews arrived, they identified one person in need of extrication. One person was pronounced dead on the scene and three others were transported to trauma centers, officials said.
Among the severely injured were a man in his 30s, a pregnant woman in her 20s and an infant, officials said.
The Department of Public Safety has taken over the scene and is investigating the cause of the accident.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) offers driving tips to help keep people safe on the road.
“There’s always room for improvement when it comes to road safety,” the department said on its website.
ADOT’s suggestions include:
Don’t speed or drive aggressively
Never drive while under the influence of substances
Avoid distractions while driving
Wear your seatbelt and make sure all passengers are doing the same
When an emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, move over
Stay extra aware in work zones
Be prepared for weather conditions that make driving dangerous
“Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, by calling 511, downloading the AZ 511 app and through ADOT’s Twitter feed, @ArizonaDOT,” the department said.
