Snow melt and rain during the day turned roads around the West Shore treacherous with black ice Monday night, with several road closures and reports of a serious crash on Sooke Road.

West Shore RCMP had to close Bear Mountain Parkway and Finlayson Arm Road due to black ice making the roads too dangerous to travel on. As of 8 p.m. on Monday, the two roads remained closed.

Roads around Colwood and Metchosin were also reported to be covered in black ice as the temperature hovered around freezing.

β€œWe were driving back to Langford from The Q Centre and saw several cars slide off the road and hit curbs and trees and they weren’t going very fast. It was extremely dangerous,” said Daryl Fediw, who was coming home from his son’s hockey practice early Monday evening.
