QUINCY (WGEM) – A multi-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 104 in Adams County early Saturday evening killed one person and injured several others, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Adams County Sheriff Rich Wagner said the crash happened on Route 104 between Rock Quarry Rd. and Meyer Rd., also known as Scottie’s Hill due to its close proximity to Scottie’s Fun Spot.
Adams County Chief Deputy Sam Smith said three patients were taken to Blessing Hospital in Quincy and additional people were treated by the Adams County Ambulance Service and released on scene.
Smith said investigators determined that 5 vehicles were involved in the crash, despite early witness reports that as many as 15 vehicles were involved. That higher vehicle count could be attributed to drivers pulling over to help.
“Passer-bys in the community, people who even beat us here, and provided help. We really appreciate that,” Smith said.
First responders were called to the scene just before 5:30 p.m. and Wagner said the highway would be shut down in that area for several hours as a crash reconstruction team worked the scene.
Smith said the cause of the crash was still undetermined Saturday night.
Drivers reported the highway was very slick from the freezing drizzle the area had been experiencing on Saturday. The National Weather Services put out a Winter Weather Advisory on Friday warning of an icy glaze from the drizzle.
Wagner said several crashes had been reported across the county.
“The roads are becoming very slick. We’re receiving calls and responding to numerous accidents,” Wagner said Saturday evening.
