Police have not yet released the name of a gang member who died in a crash near Maruia on Tuesday.

A second person was moderately injured after the vehicle the two people were in rolled on State Highway 65, between Memorial Lane and the Shenandoah Highway, about 8.30am.

The road was closed until just before 5pm, while police and emergency services dealt with the scene and investigated.

A police spokeswoman said she could not give details of what the cause of the crash was believed to have been as it was still being investigated, and could not yet release the deceased person’s name.

Senior Sergeant Brent Cook of Greymouth Police confirmed to Stuff that the person who died was a gang member.

Armed police were seen in the vicinity of the crash afterward, along with people wearing hazardous material suits. Cook said this was because police found some chemicals at the crash scene and treated it as a β€œworse case scenario”, until it was later found the substance was diesel and not suspicious.

β€œThere were circumstances that were concerning at the time,” he said.

The police spokeswoman said the drums of diesel were found in the crashed vehicle. She said their thoughts were with the deceased person’s whānau.
