A two-vehicle crash four miles south of Claflin early Thursday afternoon left one of the drivers dead and the other injured, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.
The names of the victims had not been released as of press time, and the crash remains under investigation, Bellendir said.
The initial indications are that shortly after noon, at the intersection of NE 130 Avenue and NE 70 Road, a water truck and a semi tractor-trailer hauling another truck collided. One of the trucks failed to yield the right of way.
There was only one occupant in each vehicle.
The crash closed the road, he said. “We have trucks in the ditch, things burned up. It’s a mess.”
When he spoke, it was 4:30 p.m. and he estimated authorities would be on scene for another several hours.
Bellendir said more information would be forthcoming.
