The A303 has been closed for several hours this morning (January 14) after a serious crash.
The busy dual-carriageway was shut in both directions between Ilchester and Podimore as emergency services were called to the scene at around 5.42am.
The road was closed both ways before the westbound carriageway was reopened just after 9am.
The eastbound carriageway remained closed at the time of publication.
Photos from the crash scene show two cars with significant damage at a bend in the road.
One vehicle can be seen on the outside verge, while another can be seen on the inside verge next to the central reservation.
You can see photos from the scene below.
The crash came as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for fog and frost, with gritters deployed overnight.
National Highways has revealed the incident caused damage to the central reservation.
A statement from the highways authority earlier this morning read: “The closure is expected to remain in place throughout the morning due to the severity of the incident, and to allow for a police-led investigation to be safely carried out at the scene.
“A two-vehicle collision occurred at 5.42am and caused damage to the central reservation.
“All emergency services are present, with the police also set to lead on the recovery of the vehicles.”
This is the second serious crash on the A303 between Ilchester and Podimore in the space of seven days.
The busy route was also closed for a number of hours on January 7 after a “multi-vehicle collision”.
