Durham police continue to investigate after a self-driving bus collided with a tree in Whitby.

It happened on December 16 in the area of Victoria Street West and Watson Street West.

The 23-year-old man in the vehicle acting as a safety attendant was injured in the crash and taken to a trauma unit.

He has since been released from hospital and continues to recover.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

Durham police say their investigation has found that the vehicle was being operated in manual mode prior to, and at the time the crash.

Officers say the hazard mitigation safety systems designed for the vehicle while in autonomous mode were disabled at the time of the collision.
