A man is dead following a collision and carjacking in the Durham region that was subject to a Special Investigations Unit investigation Sunday afternoon.

The police watchdog said in a news release that the Port Hope Police Service received a call about an aggressive driver and arrived on the scene of a two-vehicle collision.

It was reported that one of the drivers from the collision fled the scene, carjacked a pickup truck and allegedly forced the driver to operate the vehicle.

OPP officers and Durham Regional Police were able to locate the truck and deployed a spike belt, thereby halting the vehicle.

β€œThe driver of the pickup truck hit the spike belt and entered the ditch near the Highway 115 southbound ramp to Highway 401,” said the SIU in a statement.

Officials identified the alleged carjacker as male but have not yet confirmed his age. The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital where he later died.

The 28-year-old male driver was also taken to hospital with unknown injuries while a female passenger was found uninjured.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or discharge of a firearm at a person.

The SIU is requesting anyone with information, including video or photos of the incident to contact their lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
