Police are appealing for witnesses after a young woman died in hospital on Christmas Eve following a horror crash on the M8.

Emergency services were called to the scene between J3 and J2, near Livingston, West Lothian, at around 8.50pm on December 23.

The 20-year-old driver suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she tragically passed away the next day.

Her female passenger, 21, was also hurt during the crash but was released following medical treatment.

The eastbound carriageway was closed for around seven hours to allow for a full accident investigation to take place.

Police say the Vauxhall motor left the road around 300 metres from the bridge over the Union Canal.

Road Policing Sergeant Iain McIntyre said: β€œOur thoughts are very much with the family of the woman who died and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

β€œI am appealing to anyone who may have been driving in the area at the time to get in touch. In particular, anyone with dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation is asked to call us.

β€œIf you can help then please contact us via 101, quoting incident number 3156 of Thursday, 23 December, 2021.”
